Jiaogulan, also known as Southern Ginseng, Xiancao, Penta, and Immortality Herb, is native to the mountainous regions of China and other Asian countries. Medicinal use of Jiaogulan began during the Ming Dynasty, during which it was used for throat problems, edema, and tumors. Jiaogulan is also called Xiancao, which means "Immortality Herb", due to its healing powers. It is similar in properties to Panax Ginseng, even though the two plants are unrelated. Recent research indicates that Jiaogulan shows promise in the areas of cholesterol regulation and in lowering blood pressure. Jiaogulan is also a powerful antioxidant and has adaptogenic properties. It also is beneficial to digestion and nutrient absorption. Studies have also shown that Jiaogulan improves immune system function and may improve heart function, increasing strength and stamina. In China, Jiaogulan is often used as an anti-inflammatory, a detoxifier, a cough remedy, and as a treatment for chronic bronchitis. |
