History and Uses:
Solomon's Seal Root is a relative of the Lily-of-the-Valley and is native to northern Europe and Siberia. The common name of "seal" possibly derives from the circular scars on the roots, which resemble a stamped seal, or it could be due to the plant's ancient use as a "seal" for infected wounds and broken bones. Solomon's Seal was formerly used to treat consumption and bleeding in the lungs, and the root was also used topically in a poultice for bruises, inflammation, tumors and hemorrhoids. It is said to be effective as an astringent, especially as a treatment for diarrhea, dysentery and general stomach and intestinal problems. Solomon's Seal was also used in cosmetics as a facial toner. In some circles, Solomon's Seal Root was believed to be an aphrodisiac, and it was used in many love potions. Today, the herb is most often used in cases of female complaints, such as menorrhagia and leukorrhea.
